What is a chiropractic adjustment?
Chiropractors make adjustments to the body, primarily the spine, to reposition bones that are out of proper alignment, subluxated and/or moving incorrectly. Techniques to adjust the vertebrae vary, depending on the patient’s age and condition, as well as the doctor’s training and experience. Adjustments help to remove interference with the nervous system, which improves spinal function and overall health. If you’ve ever injured a joint, there’s a good chance chiropractic treatment can help.
What is a vertebral subluxation?
A vertebral subluxation happens when the joints of the spine don’t move properly and/or the bones of the spine become misaligned. This type of subluxation can be caused by physical stresses on the spine and nervous system, such as falls, car accidents, poor posture and repetitive motion. Other causes include chemical stress from things like smoking and excessive alcohol use, as well as emotion stress. Regardless of the cause, these subluxations need to be detected and removed.
What is a slipped disc?
Discs are often referred to as the “shock absorbers” of the spine. Though a variety of issues are said to be a “slipped disc,” discs do not really slip. But they can tear, decay, bulge or dehydrate, and all of those things can be serious problems.
Will I experience pain after an adjustment?
Some people may experience mild discomfort after an adjustment. Typically, this can be relieved with ice or moist heat.
Can chiropractic care be helpful for arthritis?
Patients with various forms of arthritis may get significant results from chiropractic care. Keeping the spinal joints moving freely helps minimize the stiffness and pain associated with arthritis. Studies show that ongoing chiropractic care from a young age may reduce the risk of osteoarthritis later in life.
Can you see a chiropractor if you have had back surgery?
Yes. Research shows that up for half of those who have spinal surgery experience a relapse of original symptoms within months or years. Chiropractic care may help prevent repetitive surgeries, or even keep you from having to have surgery in the first place.
Can I see a chiropractor if I am pregnant?
Absolutely. Pregnant women frequently get amazing results from chiropractic treatment. Chiropractors are trained in special techniques for adjusting pregnant women, and obstetricians are increasingly referring patients to chiropractors for pain relief.
